Kevin was a marketing student at the State University in Fullerton, California. He became involved in drama when he met an important actor on a plane who told Kevin that he could start acting if that was what he wanted to do. He graduated in 1978 and got a marketing job. He did that for only 30 days but he soon started acting. He made his film debut in 1974 in Sizzle Beach USA. He then decided to take up acting and directors soon saw his potential, though it wasn't easy for them to decide how to use Kevin since he had the bad habit of speaking up if things were not going on as he had planned. This is why he appeared in movies such as Night Shift (1982) and Frances (1982).
He also appeared in movies like Bill Durham (1983) where he was Crash Davis and Field of Dreams where he played as Ray Kinsella. He was offered $18 million so he went to the Beach Hills of South Dakota to film Western Epic and Dances with Wolves (1990). This film was not only one of the biggest money makers but it received that year's Academy Award as the winning film and Kevin also received an Oscar as the Best Actor.
Kevin also appeared in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) This also made money the same as in The Bodyguard (1992) where Kevin worked with Withney Houston. A Perfect World (1993) directed by Clint Eastwood is a movie where Kevin played a half-psycho and half benign prison escapee which was a dissapointment. Unfortunately Kevin followed Perfect World with another cast-against-type failure. His most recent film Waterworld received a huge amount of negative publicity but anyway it has been enjoying box office success.
